George Washington, the first American president selected the site of Washington DC at the meeting of the Anacostia and Potomac rivers, close to his estate. Looking to Versailles for inspiration it was L'Enfant, a French engineer who designed the capital. Toady with its tree-lined avenues, monuments and memorials, Washington is one of the most visited city's in the world. Attractions include The White House and U.S. Capital building, the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress. The John F. Kennedy Center, the Washington Monument, the National Archives and the museums of the Smithsonian. It is definatley worth noting that most of the museums in Washington have free entry. Across the river in Virginia are the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery.
