The Republic of Singapore is an island city-state in Southeast Asia, situated on the southern tip of Malay Peninsula. Once a British trading settlement self-government was granted in 1959; Singapore has subsequently become one of the world's most prosperous countries. Its combination of Western-style development and Eastern-style calm seems to present the best of both hemispheres. Within Singapore you will find Chinatown the city's cultural heart, Little India and Arab St a traditional textile district that is the Muslim centre. Places of Colonial interest in Singapore include the Empress Place Building that houses a museum, art galleries and a chic restaurant, Raffles Hotel and many churches. Other attractions include Orchard Road, Haw Par Villa, Jurong Bird Park, the Singapore Discovery Centre and Sentosa Island with its museums, aquariums, beaches, sporting facilities and rides.
Singapore has 3 international airports Singapore (SIN) Paya Lebar Airport (QPG) and Seletar Airport (XSP)
Air
The airport in Singapore is Changai Airport (SIN). Since Singapore is a major regional hub, over 80 major carriers fly here. Singapore Airlines is the main carrier. The airport is divided into three main terminals, plus a dedicated Budget Terminal for low-cost airlines. Public transport and taxis go from the airport to the city centre.
Sea
Singapore is a popular port for both regional and world cruises from Asia, Europe and North America. Star Cruises operate from Singapore throughout Southeast Asia. Singapore also has four ferry terminals for international ferries, which travel there from the Riau Islands of Indonesia and the Malaysian state of Johar.
Coach
There is no central bus station in Singapore and different companies operate from points all over the city. Buses to and from Kuala Lumpur and other Malaysian destinations operate on a regular basis. Major carriers include Aeroline, First Coast, Nice, Transnasional and Transtar. The buses vary in price, amenities and efficiency.
Rail
Singapore is the Southern Terminal of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malayan Railway or KTMB). Trains from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Malacca arrive daily. These trains are slower than buses but offer air conditioning and dining cars. Overnight sleeper trains are also available. More information can be found at the official KTMB website. Tickets can be booked online at the website with 48 hours advanced notice.
Road
Singapore is linked to Malaysia and the Asian mainland by one causeway spanning the Johor Strait and another servicing Tuas. Incoming foreign motorists must go through customs and pay a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) and a toll charge at the checkpoint. The fees are rather high and the procedure is quite complicated, so visit the Land Transport Authority website for further information. Taxis, however, can go from Kotaraya to any point in Central Singapore as well as the Changi Airport.
