Seattle is the largest city in the state of Washington, and is one of the West Coast's most popular vacation destinations. It is situated between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, about 180 km south of the Canadian border, in King County. The first white settlers arrived in 1851 at Alki Point, and the first plans for the Town of Seattle were filed in 1853. Attractions in Seattle include the spectacular views from the top of the Space Needle, Experience Music Project founded by Paul Allen to house his vast collection of Northwest rock memorabilia and the Seafair summer festival that takes place in late July and early August. Seattle also has many theaters and museums as well as hundreds of excellent restaurants and cafes.
