Located on the bank of the Salzach River, Salzburg is the capital of Land Salzburg. Up until 1816 an independent city-state, the city boasts some of Austria's best Baroque architecture. Salzburg is famed for its musical heritage, this is due largely in part to Mozart, who was born here in 1756 but also the annual Salzburg Festival that takes place in July. Salzburg was also the setting for The Sound of Music. Visitors can tour Hellbrunn Castle on the outskirts of the city with its quirky fountains that were featured in the movie.
