Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in the US and dates from 1681. It was the original capital and then-largest city in the United States and at one time eclipsed Boston, Massachusetts and New York. Philadelphia, which translated from Greek means "City of Brotherly Love," is one of Americas most ethnically mixed cities, with Italians, Irish, Eastern Europeans and Asians living side by side among the majority black population. Philadelphia was a planned city with a strict grid system laid out by William Penn Jr. With all streets running either north-south or east-west it was the system that was to provide the pattern for most American cities. Most visitors to the city spend their time in historic Old City and Center City. Other neighborhoods of interest including South Philadelphia, University City, Chestnut Hill, Chinatown, Germantown, Manayunk, Queen Village and Society Hill.
