Commissioned after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 in remembrance of the 58000 people that died the Basilica of the 'Sacre Coeur' was finally completed in 1919 having been financed by every parish in France. Since 1885, the prayer of perpetual worship has been maintained 24 hours a day and this famous sanctuary remains a place of pilgrimage. The interior of the church is extensively decorated with mosaics and contains one of the world's largest depicting Christ with outstretched arms. The basilica is built on a vast scale to take full advantage of its commanding site from which there is a panoramic views of Paris in all directions extending over 30 km.
