Considered by many Parisians to be most beautiful square in the city it is also the oldest. It was Henry IV who first developed this marshy land on the right bank that became home to many famous faces such as Louis XII, Richelieu and Victor Hugo who wrote a large part of Les Miserables here. Today the square provides a welcoming grassy expanse with benches and a children's play area. There are many upscale boutiques and restaurants that cluster under the arcade and spill into the surrounding streets.
