Originally built by Charles V to augment the city's defences the fortress was converted in to a prison by Richelieu to house such prominent inmates as Voltaire and the Marquis de Sade. Held as symbol of royal absolutism the building was stormed by Parisians on July 14, 1789 marking the start of the French Revolution. The demolition of the Bastille began the next day but some of the remains of the fort are still visible in the nearby Galli square.
