Notre-Dame is probably the most famous image in French Gothic art with its unforgettable monumental facade dominating the city. It was designed by Maurice de Sully with construction work beginning in 1163 it was finally completed around 1240 becoming a prototype for future Frenc cathedrals. The cathedral is home to what is believed to be the crown of thorns worn by Christ at his crucifixion and part of the True Cross. One of the best views of Notre-Dame is from the riverside promenade or from a bateau-mouche on the river.
