Although building began in 1764 it was not until 1842 after almost a century of radical modifications and delays in construction that the present building was completed as a church. Built in the style of a Greek Temple the church is surrounded by a facade of 52 Corinthian columns rising 20 meters in height. The southern staircase offers one of the most beautiful perspectives of Paris, down the rue Royale, across the Concorde, the Seine and beyond.
