Built on the foundations of a crusader castle dating back to the late 1100's the site of the Louvre has served as a prison and palace as well as a fortress, a concert hall and a theatre. It was not until the revolution that the Louvre was finally confirmed as Musee Central des Arts whilst still the residence of famous historical figures like Napoleon. Divided into 7 departments, the Louvre collections incorporate works dating from the birth of the great antique civilisations right up to the first half of the 19th century.
