One of the most recognisable structures in the world the Eiffel Tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889 to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution. The 300 metre high tower was designed by A. G. Eiffel with an iron framework supported on four masonry piers. When it was opened in the Champ-de-Mars in March 1889, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building in the world. It was intended for demolition 20 later and was almost torn down in 1909 but was saved because of its antenna - used for telegraphy at that time. The Eiffel Tower is universally recognised as a symbol of Paris.
