This great Parisian landmark was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to celebrate his victory at the battle of Austerlitz. The Arc de Triomphe is also called place de l'Etoile or star as there are twelve avenues that radiate from the Arch and the place Charles de Gaulle that surrounds it. Today you can see the tomb of the unknown soldier, killed in the First World War and the flame of remembrance is rekindled each evening at 6.30 in remembrance of all those killed in action.
