Nice is the capital of the Riviera and is the fifth largest city in France. The many hours of sunshine and relaxed living make Nice one of Europe's most popular year round retreats. The city was founded by the Greeks who named it Nike, or Victory and there is plenty of evidence remaining from its ancient past. Other historical sites include the famous Promenade des Anglais in the Old Town, the birth place of modern tourism and the Roman Amphitheater from which you can visit the Nice International Jazz Festival which takes place every August.
