Manila is the capital city of the Philippines. The city is located on central Luzon Island, on the eastern shore of Manila Bay surrounded by mountains. Because of its picturesque location, Manila is often called the Pearl of the Orient and is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. The city grew from a small fishing village on the banks of the Pasig River into the seat of the colonial government of Spain when it controlled the Islands. Today a wealth of attractions await the visitor including the medieval walled city of Intramuros that was built by the Spanish in the 16th century. This compact square, originally a Chinese settlement was rebuilt as a fort that expanded to include 15 churches and six monasteries. Other attractions include Manila's museums that reflect Manila's rich historical and cultural heritage including the National Museum, Escaolta that is one of the oldest commercial centers in the country, Binondo Manila's Chinatown, Fort Santiago and Rizal Park with open lawns, ornamental gardens, paved walks and wooded areas.
