Lyon is France's second largest city and is located in the heart of the Rhone-Alps region. It lies on the natural crossroads between northern Europe and the Mediterranean coast. The city was founded by the Romans on Fourviere Hill where evidence of the original Roman city can still be found. Situated at the heart of a major road network the city expanded greatly in the 16th century due the silk trade. Other places of interest in the city include the covered passageways in the Renaissance district of Old Lyon centered around Saint Jean Cathedral. Lyon is also famed for its many exclusive restaurants.
