The Tower of London is actually just outside the City of London in the borough of Tower Hamlets. It was commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1078 in a location where previous Roman fortifications used to be. It's original purpose was to protect London from outside invaders.

Through the centuaries the tower has served a number of other purposes. It exhibited wild animals to the the public (the inspiration to William Blakes poem The Tyger), it was a place for public executions, the seat of the British government, a prison and is still today a royal residence although it is no longer occupied by the royal family. Since 1303 the Crown Jewels have also been held at the tower under constant guard.

Today the Tower of London is a world renowned landmark and a very popular tourist attraction. It is manned by Beefeaters who act as tour guides and provide security including locking up for the night in the Ceremony of the Keys. Pay it a visit and find out about the various legends, tales and mysteries of this historic building.
