Tower Bridge took 8 years to construct and was completed in 1894, today it is one of the most recognisable bridges from around the world. Public pressure to build a bridge in the east of London had been mounting as the area became more densly populated. In 1876 the Corporation of London which was responsible for the area decided that a new bridge had to be built.

It was decided that Tower Bridge could not stop ships and boats from sailing as far as London Bridge which is the next one upstream because the area was a busy port. The bridge design had to be very different form all the other London bridges to allow for the river traffic. A public competition led to over 50 designs being submitted and in 1884 the winning design was chosen.

The bridge took 8 years, 5 major contracors and 432 workers to complete and has been fully functional since it was opened. It's worth a visit as is The Tower Bridge Exhibition.
