Originally a convent garden, Inigo Jones built a piazza here in the 1630's modeled on those he had seen in Italy creating London's first public square. A former fruit and veg market it has now blossomed in to a pot-pourri of shops, stalls and restaurants in the square itself and the nest of narrow surrounding streets. It is probably the best place in London to see free entertainment; you will also find the London Transport and Theatre Museums' here.
