The City of London known as the square mile or simply the City, is London's main financial district. Today it is mostly comprised of office buildings, however it is located at the original site where people first settled. So it is literally as old as London itself and this can be seen from the eclectic mix in architecture.

The City lies on the north bank of the Thames and extends from Fleet Street in the west up to Tower Bridge in the East. Historically, it has always been the centre of commerce. Initially as the main port which took delivery of products from all over the world from spices to stone and today as the centre of financial markets such as the London Stock Exchange.

The area is definitely worth a visit or better still, a guided tour. You will find yourself among numerous buildings boasting of architectural awards as well as medieval lanes with ancient pubs, churches and monuments. You would not be able to tell that much of it was destroyed in 1666 in a great fire that started in a bakery in the heart of the city.

Connections: The city has good tube connections the northern, central, circle, district, Hammersmith and city lines all pass through it. There are also five destination train stations, Blackfriars, Cannon Street, Fenchurch Street in the south, Liverpool Street and Moorgate in the north. Liverpool Steet station connects to Stansted airport and Moorgate connects to Luton airport. There are many buses that go through the city, numbers 15 and 25 go from east to west while 43 and 149 from north to south.
