Borough Market is located just south of the river Thames, upstream of London Bridge. It's ancestor was an ancient market founded in 43 AD by the Romans. The area where it is located was one of the most active on the south bank of the river and London Bridge (the first bridge built in London) connected it to the main settlement area on the north bank.
Borough Market is the oldest fruit and vegetable wholesale market still trading in central London. Records show that a thousand years ago it also sold fish, grain & cattle.
Although it still focuses on fruit and vegetables, today it and local shops retail in fine food as well. In the early hours it attracts greengrocers, restaurateurs and hoteliers form the rest of London who stock up on the produce. During the day it is a bustling marketplace attracting many locals especially at lunch time.
