Lima is the capital and the largest city in Peru. Positioned halfway down the desert coastline of Peru, the city of Lima is located between the foothills of the Andes mountain range and the Pacific port of Callao. The city was founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and for 300 years it was the capital of Spain's South American empire and was known as The City of Kings’. Lima offers many opportunities to explore buildings dating back to colonial times including Cuzco Cathedral and the National University of San Marcos. Other tourist attractions include superb museums including the National Museum that contains excellent exhibits tracing the history of Peru’s ancient civilisations, Museo Nacional de Antropologia and Arqueologia Museo de Oro, the underground gold museum. Yet it is also a modern and cosmopolitan city, with luxury hotels, casinos and shopping opportunities along Plaza Mayor and Plaza San Martin the long pedestrian street crowded with shoppers, vendors and sightseers.
Lima's main passenger airport is Jorge Chavez International Airport.
