Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng, South Africa, was founded when a prospector named George Harrison stumbled onto the gold reef in 1886. Although the city's own mines have since been abandoned it is still known in the Zulu language as eGoli or the "place of gold". Today Johannesburg is more diverse, vibrant, and exhilarating than ever. The city center is laid out in a grid, making it easy to get around and offers visitors a large selection of recreational, cultural and historical attractions including archaeological sites dating to the Stone Age and Iron Ages.
