Jakarta is located on the island of Java and is the capital city of the Indonesian archipelago. The present day metropolis was founded by the Dutch Governor Jan Pieterzoon Coen. The city's location provided a safe harbour for the trading ships of the Dutch East India Company and under Dutch Colonial Rule the Indonesian Archipelago became known as The Spice Islands. Today Jakarta is a city of extremes, a center for business, arts, culture and religion. Attractions include Mesjid Istiqlal, Sunda Kelapa, Taman Fatahillah or Fatahillah Square in the historical Old Jakarta, the fish market or Pasar Ikan, Museum Sejarah Jakarta or Jakarta Historical Museum and the Istana Merdeka, the Presidential Palace that is located on the north side of Merdeka Square.
Jakarta is served by Soekarno-Hatta Airport.(CGK)
