Delhi, the capital of India became independent at midnight on August 14-15, 1947. The city occupies a location between the Aravalli Hills to the southwest and the Yamuna River on whose western banks it stands. The old city served as the capital of the later Mughal Empire and Delhi is full of fascinating temples, museums, mosques and forts, each with a distinct architectural style. In comparison, New Delhi is a spacious, open city of tree-lined avenues, spacious parks and colonial mansions. Delhi is a major travel gateway and because of its long and fascinating history there are plenty of interesting things to see. The area that it covers contains a number of historical cities, including the semi-legendary Indraprastha. Other famous sites in Delhi include India Gate, Red Fort or the Lal Qila, Qutab Minar, Old Fort or the Purana Qila, Jama Masjid, Birla Temple, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, Lodhi Gardens, National Museum, Jantar Mantar, Nehru Planetarium and Badhkal Lake.

The city is served by Indira Gandhi International Airport.
