Cannes is a cosmopolitan city synonymous with style and sophistication. During the 11th century Cannes was in fact owned by monks. Its transformation from small fishing village began in 1834 with a visit by Lord Brougham a former British Chancellor of the Exchequer who established the towns reputation as a health resort. Today the city hosts many conventions and festivals but is famed most for the International Film Festival that takes place each year in May.
