Cairo is the capital city of Egypt and is the largest city in both Africa and the Middle East. It is also known as Al Qahirah and its native name is Misr. Cairo began as a Roman trading outpost called Babylon that is now referred to as Old or Coptic Cairo at the mouth of an ancient canal that once connected the Nile to the Red Sea. Today the city spreads along the banks of the River Nile for 40km north to south. Cairo is a very popular vacation destination offerring a chaotic mixture of sights, sounds and smells, twisting streets, medieval buildings, oriental bazaars and Islamic architecture of carved domes. The Westernised downtown district of central Cairo around Midan Tahrir are the city centre's main attractions including the Egyptian Museum and the treasures of Tutankhamun's tomb. To the west is the city of Giza with its three large pyramids including the Great Pyramid of Giza, the sole survivors of the Seven Wonders of the World and the planet's oldest tourist attraction.

Cairo International Airport, 24 km/15 MI from city center.
