Uluru in the heart of Australia

Ever since the European discovery and settlement of Australia it was pretty clear that the country was the home of some very spectacular natural sites. Two of these sites couldn’t be more different: Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock is an enormous rock formation almost in the dead centre of the country and the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system off the north eastern coast.

For anyone who has visited the two places, it won’t come as a great surprise that they are both on the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. For the international cultural organisation both Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef represent irreplaceable natural sources of inspiration which are deserving of representing the world’s heritage.

More recently both have also been nominated as two of the 28 finalists in the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign, a global study which began in 2007 in which there were over 440 nominations. The announcement was made in Zurich by the panel of experts, however with the final announcement of ultimate 7 seven wonders is not due until 2011 so watch this space.
