The German travel group TUI is listed this morning on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the fourth time in succession. The US index, launched in 1999 tracks the financial performance of leading worldwide corporations that operate within a sustainable framework directed at ethical investors. A sustainable business approach aims at creating value for investors by taking advantage of opportunities in economic, environmental and social developments.

The Hannover based group’s executive board voiced a desire to “continually develop [their] sustainability strategy and continue to be a key player in determining the standards in [the travel] industry”. Their efforts are commendable as they have also met the criteria to be listed in other global ethical indices.

Germany has the largest European allocation to the Dow Jones’ index which shows the cultural mentality of the European business powerhouse. It is not surprising that TUI as the counties largest travel group has such a good track record for their sustainable approach which counts as a great addition to its strengths. Investors who wish to be socially responsible with their savings will bear this in mind as the world begins to exit the downturn caused by the credit crunch.
