With its varied, spectacular landscapes and vibrant mix of cultures, Europe is home to a plethora of fabulous driving holiday destinations. Here`s a rundown of the top ten…

For us Brits France is a great choice because its close location means we can take our own cars – particularly ideal for those with a wonderful motor they wish to enjoy. By driving through France you can not only enjoy the country`s spectacular scenery, but also stop off and explore further as and when you feel like it – great if you`re following a wine or cheese orientated route! France`s neighbour Spain is also a wonderful country to explore by car, as you can tailor your holiday to the side of Spain it is that you really want to see, be it the great cities like Madrid, the rugged countryside of AndalucĂa, or the glittering southern coastline.

Germany is another fantastic country to explore by car. As well as offering a quick way of travelling between the charming historical major cities such as Dresden, Berlin and Munich, driving also allows visitors to absorb the vast and stunning German landscape in a way that would simply be impossible by train. Likewise, Austria is also best explored by car, as this again allows holiday makers to really enjoy the breath taking `Sound of Music` scenery at their own pace.

Further south, driving through Italy allows visitors to veer off the beaten track and find all of those tiny little country idylls many fantasise about when we think of Italy. If sunshine is what you`re after, then driving enthusiasts might also consider a trip to Greece. Known throughout the world for its stunning scenery, historical monuments and charming little villages, driving past countless olive groves is certainly one of the best ways to explore this beautiful country.

If, however, you`d like to spend a week or so motoring around one of the less typical European holiday destinations, a driving holiday in Norway could be perfect. Norway offers some of Europe`s most beautiful scenery and many claim that the mountainous drive from Oslo to Bergen is Scandinavia`s most stunning. For the adventurous out there there`s even the chance to leave behind the fjords of the south and drive north along what locals call the Arctic Highway!

Like Norway, Latvia also makes for a wonderful driving holiday. Many visitors to Latvia never make it outside of the capital city of Riga, yet Latvia has much to offer in the way of beautiful scenery, ancient castles, quaint little villages and even beaches, all of which are best reached by car. Alternatively, Romania is a wonderful place to get behind the wheel, being home to a rich cultural heritage and many interesting places to explore. The black coast is a wonderful place to explore by car, before heading north through the beautiful mountains to the delightfully mysterious and legendary Transylvania.

Lastly, for something a little closer to home, Ireland is a great place for a driving holiday. Like France, the proximity of Ireland to the UK means you can take your own car and furthermore they drive on the same side of the road, which is favourable for some. Known as the Emerald Isle, getting behind the wheel and hitting the open road truly is the best way to absorb the lush scenery of this naturally beautiful island.

Unless you`re heading to somewhere like France or Ireland, it may be best to fly to your chosen destination and hire a car there. For car rental Rome, Athens, Vienna, Berlin and other major cities are a great places to start, as they are likely to offer you a good deal and also means you get to explore the city before driving off into the sunset!
