African Safari Holidays are usually fairly expensive and eager visitors often save a lifetime for the trip of, well a lifetime! Tourists expect to see wonderful wildlife, beautiful beaches and they also want outstanding value for money. I’m a travel writer and have an expert knowledge of some great value places to stay if you are going on Safari any time soon. We aren’t talking about the cheapest hotels, but what the venues offer for what you are spending. Book a room at these residencies and be in for a great value treat.

5 Kenya – Papillon Lagoon Reef

This 3 star resort in Kenya is situated by Diani beach, which is known to be the most picturesque beach in the country. The hotel is built in a traditional Swahili style, and has its own botanical gardens and local population of monkeys! This resort offers great value for those seeking a blend of safari and beach on their trip, and this is why this Kenyan hotel is great value, you’re getting the best of both worlds.

4 Tanzania – Selous Safari Camp

Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa, making up the size of a European country. There is a wide range of wildlife including elephants and lions on display in their natural environment. The actual camp is situated between the riverine and lake complex, where this is a high concentration of birds and animals. The camp has a pool area and nice tenting. This is such great value as it offers some of the best animal watching in Africa.

3 Zanzibar – Diamonds Dream of Zanzibar

This is a 5 star resort on the east coast of Zanzibar. There is an elegant atmosphere and the setting of the hotel is fabulous. True luxury can be experienced at Diamonds Dream, without a hefty price associated with it. What’s more this hotel is all inclusive and features a mix of African and Arabic themes running throughout. This is a small palace on the coast of Africa and you can pamper yourself in luxury for a great value price.

2 Botswana – Xugana Island Lodge

Botswana is renowned for fantastic safaris and once in a lifetime excursions due to its unique positioning between the Okavango Delta and Kalahari Desert. The makeup of the country means a Botswana safari could be one of the most exciting holidays you will ever go on. The Xugana Island Lodge is situated in one of the most stunning parts of the Okavango, and the facilities and ambience of the lodge is second to none. The lodge comes at a great price point and allows you the option of a private wooden chalet set among communal areas, a pool and mature gardens.

IMAGE: Xugana-Island-lodge-botswana.gif

1 Kenya – Pinewood Beach Resort & Spa

This resort comes in at an unbelievable price for the amenities the hotel has to offer. Situated in Mombassa, this hotel has won numerous awards for its all around offering to guests. Rated 4 stars, you can savour the cuisine made from their own vegetable garden and locally caught fish. You’ll also enjoy unspoiled white beaches and some amazing African hospitality. Taking a safari trip is of course an option, and the hotel will take care of everything you could dream of to ensure you have the perfect African Holiday.

Imagine coming upon a pride of lions striding in their majestic way or the fierce eyes of a tiger watching you from behind the bushes or even a gazelle speeding past you – all in real life. So pick up your camera and visit these destinations to get acquainted with the other half of the world’s population.

Kenya

Watch the annual migration of the wildebeest during July and August at Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. This moving sea of herbivores crosses over open savannahs and river in millions – a sight to see from a distance. The animals return to Serengati in October or November after feasting on the Masai Mara grass.

Masai Mara is bursting with other animals like leopards, gazelles, zebra, lions, hyena, cheetah, jackal, giraffe, impala, bat-eared foxes and rare sights of the shy black rhino. You can feast your eyes on these collections at ease if you are here during the yearly wildebeest migration.

Zambia

The “walking safari” at the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia may leave you gasping for more such heart fluttering experiences. The vehicle safaris will take you past swamps filled with hippos, crowned cranes swooping low over the grassland, antelopes grazing languidly, baboons taking cover and large herds of elephants noiselessly walking by. This place is believed to be populated by more than 60 species of animals and about 400 kinds of different birds – quite a concentration of wildlife in one area.

India

The snow leopard is a rare carnivore to be found in the high altitudes of Ladakh in India. The distinct alpine atmosphere of Ladakh houses some more rare animals, birds and flowers. Patience and some trekking can reward you with sightings of ibex, wild yak, blue sheep, and bharal and at a lower height you may even come across the musk deer. If you are a bird watcher you are in the right place because here you may never want to put down your binoculars. Watch out for the Bactrian magpies, grey tits, kite, kestrel, Turkoman rock pigeon, finches, larks, desert wheateaters and black necked crane, bar-headed geese and ducks near the lakes.

Ranthambore National Park in India is an extensive wildlife sanctuary. Tigers are its most popular inhabitants and often sighted even during the day time. It is not rare to see a mother tiger tending to her young ones out in the open or stalking her prey silently. Since tigers are hunting you will get to see many smaller mammals roaming the green stretches of this park; and don’t forget to look up into the trees for a variety of colorful birds.

Argentina

For marine wildlife close to the shore come to the Peninsula Valdes in Argentina, a world heritage site. The shoreline has gulfs, rocky cliffs, shallow bays and lagoons. You will also find sandy dunes, small islands and pebbled beaches. The southern elephant seal has the highest population here compared to the rest of the world and it is increasing. The southern right whales have found these shores to be the safest for mating and giving birth. You can watch the southern sea lions in great numbers over here, as they too find this spot safe for breeding. Watch the local orcas hunting the young sea lions and elephant seals by snatching them off the shallow surf. The Magellan penguins live here in large numbers as well.

I’ve got to admit it, although not a diver by any stretch of the imagination, I love Sharm El Sheikh. In fact, I am an ‘Egyptophile’ in general (I made up that word) , and love most things, if not all, about the country. It is an amazing place with so much to offer to all age groups and tastes, from the beautiful clear waters of the Red Sea, to the mysterious world of Ancient Egypt which still fascinates travellers as it has done for centuries. If this wasn’t enough, you can experience the ‘life source’ of the nation and jump on a boat and sail off down the Nile, one of the longest rivers in the world.

What I like about the Red Sea resorts is the location. Not only is the region stunningly attractive, but the climate is inviting all year around. In fact, Sharm El Sheikh hotels and Hurghada hotels are at their most popular whilst the majority of people are shivering through the British winter! Apart from the guarantee of good weather, there are a number of other reasons why this place should be a priority place to visit. If you wish simply to soak up the sun and enjoy the surroundings of some pretty good hotels – that’s fine. Loads of people do this and love it! After all, it should be about relaxing, unwinding and unloading the stress.
But if you want more from a trip to these parts and you crave some adventure, then adventure you can find – in spades!

SOHO Square
I have been to places like Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada and Taba several times over the years, most of the time without my family and kids. On the last occasion, at the beginning of this year, I took my family and became more aware of a place called Soho Square. Thankfully, sparing my embarrassment, there were no scantily clad ladies standing enticingly on the corners of the street. Instead, you will find a modern and refreshing area that speaks loudly to kids and families alike. It is often a problem for families at the height of the midday sun, when it is a little unwise to be on the beach, where they should retire to and still have some handy entertainment for the kids. Some of the best places to visit include the fully air-conditioned bowling alley, where you can pick up a good meal that won’t break the bank.
There are a number of good international restaurants for the customer looking for more than ‘fast food’ options, including a sushi bar and variety of places where you can find a delicious steak.

The Red Sea
The diving here is phenomenal and can be enjoyed by the beginner as well as the advanced diver who is accustomed to deep water. The Red Sea offers limitless options for your diving experience. Its ten-mile beach offers multiple diving clubs that will satisfy any budget or level of experience. Expect to see some impressive drop offs, beautiful colors and an occasional barracuda or shark. There are many options available for the diver including day trips that are less crowded.
The Red Sea is an amazing place to visit, and is one of the top spots to dive in anywhere in the world. As I mentioned earlier, I am no great diver – should see me in a wet suit (well, maybe not)! This certainly doesn’t prevent me from enjoying the waters around Sharm el Sheikh – a revelation for those who can comfortably swim with a snorkel in place. One thing that I never tire of doing is to throwing some pieces of bread into the sea, and then swimming amongst the mass of beautiful fish that jostle for an opportunity to grab their share.

If you are an experienced diver and wish to do some serious diving, there are plenty of opportunities available. With over 10 miles of coastline available for divers, there are plenty of diving clubs that are tailored to an individual’s level of competence. Expect to see some amazing things in the crystal clear waters, including the odd barracuda or shark roaming around the beautiful coral reefs.

Sharm el Sheikh Nightlife
If you like a spot of nightlife, then Sharm el Sheikh is the place to be, or for some people, a place to be seen. There are a number of impressive clubs that play host to some great names from the UK dance scene, and the action starts in the early hours! One of the best ways to end a perfect day is a trip in the moonlight to a Bedouin settlement, where you can expect first class hospitality in the form of a delicious meal, with a warm and friendly welcome.

Bio
Peter is an SEO and traveller, and when lucky, gets to visit these great places and write about Sharm El Sheikh Hotels and other jewels in the Egyptian crown.

The Sahara desert is so vast it spans the African continent, but one way to access it and the way I took is through Morocco. The town you need to get to is Erfoud in the southeast of the country. Make sure you have hired a guide because in these parts of the world the roads aren’t necessarily visible and it just takes a couple of gusts of wind to hide the tracks of other vehicles. The guide I had, knew the area very well and was able to navigate by identifying rocky outcrops, he was also well equipped as I’m sure he was aware more than most of the dangers of remaining stranded.

We reached the edge of the desert in the late afternoon. There where a handful of building around us, one which we entered was relatively cool and had running water. My guide told me to rest as we were to set out into the sands at sunset, when the temperature had dropped a bit. It wasn’t long before he awakened me and showed me outside to the back of the building, to my surprise less than 10 meters away was a dune of the finest golden sand that simply emerged out of the rocky ground. Beyond it was another, big enough to fill the horizon. I scrambled up to the top of it with some difficulty and when I got there all I could see were thousands more dunes stretching out in every direction as far as the eye could see. It was an amazing site. My guide caught up with me and in broken English he said, “three colours: yellow, orange, pink,” he pointed into the distance and slowly moved his outstretched arm along the skyline. He was right those three colours were the only ones you could see in the dunes. It must have been they way that they were angled in the setting sun that gave the impression.

Within half an hour I was seated on the back of a dromedary which was being led by a different guide on foot. I had been told that this guide spoke no English or French, all he knew was his native Berber language. We trekked through the dunes for the best part of 3 hours before we circled far enough around a dune the size of a mountain to see a flickering light in the distance. As we got closer it became apparent that it was a fire next to two traditional Berber tents and in the darkness I was able to spot a couple of palm trees. We had reached an oasis in the middle of the desert and even though no water was visible it couldn’t have been far below us. We bedded down for the night.

There are a couple of things you ought to know about sleeping in the Sahara desert. The first is that it is quite cold, enough to warrant a warm jumper. The second is that since there isn’t any light pollution whatsoever or humidity in the air, each and every star seems to shine brightly making every spec in the sky clearly visible. If it weren’t for the fact that the sand is drenched in the eerie light from above, it can’t be too different from the view you may witness by peering out of a window on the shuttle. Finally the coolness of the night brings out sand beetles that must shelter underground during the day. They are as black as coal and scarily big, about the size of your palm. Fortunately they were harmless and kept their distance if they sensed movement.

Just before dawn my guide ushered me to the top a dune, it took about half an hour and it took us quite high up. We were facing the east as the sky was quite a bit brighter in the distance. Slowly a fiery line appeared on the horizon, it steadily became thicker and brighter. It was the sun rising, because the light wasn’t direct, it was being refracted around the earth I was able to stare right at it without it hurting my eyes. For about fifteen minutes I was able to witness this spectacle of nature before it was too bright to look at. Before going back to camp I checked the colour of the dunes, they were still there: yellow, orange and pink.
