Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the city of Birmingham was born at the meeting of two railroad routes in 1870. At the center of town is Red Mountain the heart of Birmingham's steel heritage. It was here that the iron ore was mined for the cities numerous steel mills. Today, new industries and services have helped transform Birmingham into a prosperous, vibrant and friendly city. Attractions include VisionLand Theme Park, The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and the Museum of Art and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
