The romantic city of Avignon in the heart of the Vaucluse region in the south of France. It is situated on the River Rhone with its famous bridge Pont St-Benezet . Within its quiet streets and secluded courtyards are many pavement cafes and fantastic restaurants. As well as the luxury shops, you can find many of the provincial goods like ceramics and pottery, terra cotta figurines and other specialties of the region. When Pope Clement V came to Avignon in 1309 the city became the permanent residence to six successive popes. During this time the population rose greatly making Avignon one of the largest and most cosmopolitan cities in Europe.
