Amsterdam is often referred to as the 'Venice of the North', thanks to its system of canals that surround the old centre. Not surprisingly, there are several modes of water travel in Amsterdam. The canal buses travel between Centraal Station and the Rijksmuseum, the canal taxis which carry up to 25 passengers that can either be hailed from the canal-side or ordered in advance. Visitors can also hire pedalos or canal bikes and boats to explore the canals.
