Amsterdam is often referred to as the 'Venice of the North', thanks to its system of canals that surround the old center. Stretching in a fan like pattern the canals date back to the 15th century and offer some of the best architecture in the city. It is well worth taking one of the canal boat tours to see Amsterdam from the water. They give live or taped commentary on the sights and usually last about an hour including a trip through the port area. At night there are romantic candlelight cruises available with a meal.
