As Amsterdam is a compact city one of the most effective ways of getting around is by bike. There are bike lanes, which are marked out by white lines, but cyclists will still need to watch out for cars, trams and pedestrians. There are numerous places to hire bikes from including Take a Bike that is located at Stationsplein 12, near Central Station. Make sue that you leave your bike securely however as there are 100,000 bikes stolen each year in Amsterdam!
