The second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria (Al Iskandariyah) , known as "The Pearl of the Mediterranean", has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern. It was named after Alexander the Great, who founded the city. For over a thousand years from its foundation it was the capital of the country and quickly became one of the greatest cities of the Hellenistic world, and has remained one of the largest and most important cities of Egypt ever since. Alexandria is known for its legendary lighthouse that was once one of the Seven Wonders of the World and as the setting for the stormy relationship between Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Today Alexandria is famed for its beaches, restaurants ands breezy climate that attracts many tourists during the summer. Areas of interest and attractions include the Fort of Quit Bay, Abu El-Abbas Mosque, the Anfushi Tombs which are some of the oldest in Alexandria, Midan Tahrir popularly called Manshiya, the Mosque of Nebi Daniel, the Graeco Roman Museum, the Shallalat Gardens and The Corniche with its Casions bult on stilts.
